Using only foam core and other simple materials like cardboard, paper, glue and duct tape, the challenge for the team of eight was to create a life size snowmobile (that someone could sit on) within two weeks.
As final presentation of this foam model was a public performance, which required us to sing, we decided to go with Viking ship theme for the snowmobile. We rewrote lyrics for the led zeppelin ‘Immigrant song’ to describe features of this viking ship snowmobile.
Some of the key features of this snowmobile include fire gun from the mouth of the dragon, catapult for attacking and snowmobile tracks in the back.
After brainstorming and initial sketching, we switched to 3D modelling using Rhino.
After unfolding Rhino model into a flat sketch, we created patterns for foam core. After cutting foam core patterns, we started building one section at a time.
Since structural integrity of the Snowmobile was important, we made sure duct tape holded everything together from inside.
extreme care was taken for folding some of the edges after squaring them instead of a through cut.
The model was tested repeatedly during each stage as we made progress.
Green neon duct tape was used to add some accents to the eyes and other parts in the body.
